Bed Height Extensions

In the midst of making a bed for my son, and got thinking of something...

I want him to be able to climb in and out of it right now (he's two) but would like him to have it as his bed growing up, so it would need to be higher off the ground.

I was thinking of making extensions that would fit on the bottom of the head and foot board posts out of the wood I'm using now. I'm thinking that a M&T joint would work, and when the time came to raise it, I could glue the joints and drill through them and insert a dowel to keep it secure.

Thoughts on this?

If it were me I would build a little stairway to set next to the bed rather than making the bed extendable.
