what is a durable finish to use for a coffee table?

I am building a coffee table for some friends. My friends have a house on a college campus and the table will be going in the basement. There is a high possibility the table will take some abuse i.e being ran into, things dropped on, feet on the table, but most commonly beer, liquor and other drinks either being spilled on it or dripped on it. What would be the best finish to use to protect against the abuse but also be easy to be cleaned?

There are good things and bad to say about a lot of different finishes you might use. A very hard durable finish you might use would be a conversion varnish. It has to be sprayed and is water and alcohol resistant but if the table is expected to get a lot of dents the table may need to be refinishes from time to time regardless of the finish. With a conversion varnish on it you would find it more difficult to strip it. You might use an oil based polyurethane. It's water and alcohol resistant and can be applied by hand and when the time comes would be easier to remove with paint strippers. Lacquer is another option. You could use pre-catalyzed lacquer or bar top lacquer. It's not as water and alcohol resistant as poly or conversion varnish but it is very quick and easy to do. It can also be recoated from time to time to get rid of damage. The solvents in it will melt the dried finish and refresh it when another coat is applied.
