WB poly and sycamore

Hello all,
I am finishing a semi-large slab of sycamore for a headboard. This is my first time with a finished "nice" project. I have the wood sanded up to 400 grit, and I vacuumed and tack-clothed the surface to remove dust. I have applied a slightly thinned layer of WB satin poly on the front surface with a cloth applicating pad. I am getting raised wood fibers, which I understand is normal. I think my questions are as follows... 1) should i sand between coats with 220 or 400? 2) is there a good way to avoid streaking and darker spots due to overlap when wiping on? 3) should I sand after the last coat as well with a higher grit? 4) do I ever get better at this???

Thanks all!

on the first and possibly second coat sand with 220 then go to 400, I use 320. Anyway no sanding on the last coat. As far as overlapping I normally soak my rag with poly and wipe it on, maybe not the correct way to do it but it comes out good and yes practice makes perfect.
