Water vs. oil

Is it possible to use a water based stain and then use an oil based poly on top of it?

Why not, as long as the water is evaporated and all that is left is the stain - poly away

I thought I wanted a career, turns out I just wanted paychecks.

Thanks, I will give it a shot, as for drying time I will give it upwards around a week or so.

That may be overkill. Depends on temp and humidity but a couple days should do it.

I agree, where I am at it is 70F plus during the day and not much for humitity but I don't get a lot of time during the week to work on projects so that why I was allowing plenty of time. I will stain on one weekend then start the poly on the next. I know when I usually put poly on I can do a coat every four hours and then the final I allow a good week to dry before handling.
