Question Smooth Cedar Garage Doors

I just purchased a home that has some smooth cedar garage doors. I want to apply a sealer to protect the wood against all the elements. The doors face the south so the do take quite a beating from the sun.
The doors are stained & were sealer 2 years ago according to the previous owner.
My questions are: Do I have to sand the wood any? Which exterior wood sealer can I use? what's the best method to apply? Brush on or Spray?
