Simple Tongue and Grove Pine Finish

Hey all, I recently put some tongue and groove into one of my bedrooms. It came out nice, but I spent a lot of time sanding, conditioning, staining, then putting a couple of coats of urethane (Spar in this case.) The stain I used was Superdeck 1906 Valley, which really just puts somewhat of a golden hue to the wood (pic attached.)

We are looking to do another ceiling in this house, and plan on doing it in many other areas over time. Since varnish will add this color naturally, could I simply sand and use polyurethane, or spar-urethane, or even shellac and get a nice yellow/golden color to the wood? This project will be for ceilings only.

You could use just about anything on a ceiling. Just keep in mind that any oil based finish will yellow more and more as it ages.

Shellac is something that needs to be sprayed to that may not work on a ceiling that is already installed. A dewaxed shellac is good to use on the knots. It helps prevent sap from ozzing out and other finishes will adhere to it. It's very important to do this if the finish of choice is polyurethane. Polyurethane inherently has adhesion problems so sealing the knots is very important.

If you are meaning you are going over an existing finish then that makes a big difference. I would not use any shellac product. I also wouldn't use polyurethane due to the adhesion problems. I also wouldn't use any waterborne finish. If you don't mind the finish yellowing you could use just plain varnish.

Thanks, this will be a brand new install. I'll finish the boards before hanging them.
