to sand or not to sand

I just finished my first project - ash shelving, stained and 3 coats of poly. I am happy with the result and the shelves don't need to be furniture-grade smooth, they are smooth enough for me as is, and there are no nibs or dust in this top coat. So do I need to 'finish-sand'? or can I leave as-is?

The only reason to sand a finished coat is to rub it out and buff it. If you are happy with the appearance call it done.

If you were going to put another coat of finish on then it would be a good idea to scuff sand the finish with some fine sandpaper. The scratches created by sanding will make have a better adhesion than skipping the sanding.
