Purpleheart Silver Chest

I am working on a silverware chest for my new Bride's future silverware. I am using Purpleheart and was wondering what types of finishes you all recommend for this wood. On an interesting side note, I started cutting the lumber today and was pleasantly surprised to notice that it smelled just like incense when I cut it! Has anybody else noticed this? Thanks!

I only use lacquer on Purple Heart. I was told by my uncle, who has been woodworking for years, that lacquer is the best finish for Purple Heart. I have had great results with it myself.

Assumption is the mother of all foul -ups

I've used epoxy, KTM-9, shellac, polyurethane, boiled linseed oil, and wax on purpleheart. All seemed to work just fine for me. I will say I like to seal the color so I prefer finishes that will do that to those that don't.

As for smell, someone else mentioned it smelling like vomit, but I've never had that issue with purpleheart. I like the smell but I wouldn't say it's an "incense" smell either. I guess it all depends on the source for the wood...
