Protective Coat over latex?

Hey guys. I have some students making toy boxes in my my class. They are painting the boxes using a decent quality semigloss interior paint. They are afraid that the wear might be too much for just the painted surfcae. What can we put over latex to create a shine and protective layer? We thought about the Mode Podge Type of stuff for art projects/crafts. Any thoughts>

I am searching the net now for something.

Try a waterbased polyuerethane. Can usually get satin, semi or glossy.

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...
