Preserving wood bark

I have a black walnut mantel I just picked up. It has been cured for 3 1/2 years with bark on the front edge, firmly attached. I plan to finish the top with Walnut oil. My question is what should I do to the bark to maintain it as is?

I would use the same finish on the edge as the rest of it. After three years the bark should stay on anyway. It has more to do with when the tree is cut whether the bark stays on or not. If the tree is cut in winter when the tree is dormant the bark is more likely to stay on.
