Paste wax as a finish?

I'm making a keepsake box like the one below. I'm making it out of walnut and maple and I'm trying to decide what finish to put on it. I had originally planned on spraying lacquer. Now I'm kicking around just waxing it. I don't think the box will get a lot of abuse or see any water, so I'm not sure the protection it will need, so it will mainly be for appearance.

Any suggestions?

Wax doesn't have near the same finish as lacquer. It pretty much looks like raw wood when you are done. Then it would need to be re-waxed pretty frequently for the first couple years.

Instead of using common paste wax it would be better to use a finishing wax such as Bri-wax.

Hmmm...I'm making this as a door prize for my daughters baby shower, so it doesn't sound like wax would be the best option.

If it were me I would use lacquer. When it's done it's done.
