Matching An Older Golden Oak Color

Decades ago I worked in a cabinet/custom furniture shop. Our standard finishes were Watco oil. It cost extra for a custom stain or lacquer. They had a Golden Oak which I have to admit that I thought was a bit too yellow and I often added a bit of walnut when I could.

Now I'm living in a house full of Golden Oak, kitchen, family room, living room and so on. It is a stain under a fairly dulled semi-gloss lacquer. I had made some racks back then with Watco Golden Oak and it's an exact match. I bought some new Watco and they've changed the formula and added brown. The same for the Minwax version.

Does anybody know of a yellower version that would work with lacquer? That stuff can lift some stains out of the wood,

It takes a lot of tinkering to match a stain. You just have to keep buying different products until you find one that you can work with. Also if it had a nitrocellulose lacquer put over it the lacquer may have yellowed adding to the yellow of the stain. If that is the case to reproduce the yellow finish use a little amber shellac but be careful not to get too much on.
