Mappa burl coffee table hardening

Hi,

I would like to do a coffee table out a beautiful slab of mappa burl, but this wood feels a bit porous and is very easy to dent.

Would you have any recommandation to harden it and make it more solid enough for a table ?

I intended to finish it with tung oil and then 2 coats of wipe-on poly, but I wonder if it would be enough. I don't want the gloss of an epoxy resin finish.

Would a wood hardener help ? And if so, how would that impact my finish (I guess the tung oil won't have the same look after a wood hardener) ?

Thanks !

If the wood is easy to dent now, it will dent the same even with a hard finish.
Although a good finish can definitely help protect a piece, it is still super thin and relies of the wood itself to prevent dents.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it over?

Maybe ... Boat builder's penetrating epoxy? I've heard this is a great wood hardener/preserver, but I've never used it myself.
