Items that are handled often

I'm going to be making a few christmas gifts that hopefully will be handled often. Shellac is particularly easy to apply on the lathe, but would it hold up to daily handling? I'm also thinking about an oil finish (like BLO or Mahoney's walnut oil, or a Danish oil) to keep the wood feeling very much like wood. Do you have to reapply the oil often, or does it last a long time once it's cured? I'm trying to stick with a finish that won't mask the way the wood feels. After a few coats of poly, the items feel like poly, not like wood. Anyone have some good suggestions?

In my opinion oil finishes are fine for items not handled a lot. The combination of the finish with hand oils and dirt just make dirty spots where handled. I would rather have a clean item feeling like poly than a dirty item feeling like wood. A satin poly not applied too thick may come closer to filling your criteria.
