How I hate plastic laminate

Not really, but . . . That is what it is.
And recent magazine issues don't help either...

"Plastic Laminate" is really "HPL or High Pressure Laminate".

AND

It goes by the brand names

FORMICA

NEVAMAR

ARBORITE

HPL can be found at most home centers. It is usually stocked near the complete formed HPL counter tops.

Just when you ask where to look, use "Where are your Formica counter tops?" Don't ask for HPL because 90% of the home center people will just give you a blank stare. (i.e. The lights are on but nobody is home.)

Use the right tool for the job.

And if you ask for "FFABs at the drugstore you'll likely get a blank stare too. (Flexible Fabric Adhesive Bandages (Band-Aids to the less informed).

Oh the ignorance!

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did ó in his
sleep. Not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car.

Well it happens here too. From time to time we have someone ask how to cut formica and what they are really asking is how to cut a formica counter top. I think unless you are asking for a particular brand it's best to call it plastic laminate. Personally I like it better than granite for counter tops. Granite is cold to the touch and expensive so you end up pampering it. With laminate it's cheap so you can just replace it just to get a different color.
