Finishing a front door
I have been working on refinishing a new (to us) front door for my house and have been wondering what people do to bring out the grain etc. I currently am using a minwax stain in walnut and have put on several coats to get the color that we want. I am planning to use a UV protecting varnish but was thinking maybe something like tung oil underneath to help bring out the grain so it looks more striking.
Any ideas or suggestions? Poly, wax, or BLO have been the extent of my finish skills to date but I'd like to make this last a good long time and look as good as possible. So far it looks much better than the original metal door painted brown, so no matter what it will be an improvement.
So, again, I'm looking for any advice for the external surface of an entry door and how to bring out the grain and protect the wood as best as possible.
