Finish for Work Bench Top

I'm new to the list and would like some advice on a durable finish for a wood top I made for a Snap-On tool chest. The top is made from 3/4" wide strips of oak that are 1" thick.

I would like the wood top sealed against oil (automotive variety), easy to wipe up, and durable to metal parts being set on it.

I have equipment to spray a finish if that makes a difference in your recommendations.

The photo shows a portion of the unfinished oak top.

Thanks for your input.

Gil

Welcome GilF.

a couple of options: an oil finish ( BLO, danish oil etc) will look nice, just flood it on and it can be reapplied later. Oaks open pores will let dirty motor oil penetrate with an oil finish. Might not be a look you want.

A film finish ( poly, lacquar) will seal the pores with enough coats, but, drag a head across it and it will scrape off. Then it's sand and refinish, time.
