Clear coat problems

I just built a dining room table. I used general finishes medium brown dye stain for the color. I used general finishes oil based clear coat as I was told it would be ok. Might just change color a little. I put one coat on. Let it dry maybe 2 hours and put a second on. In between I used 0000 steel wool to get rid of the streaks the first coat left. The second coat is doing the exact same thing. It almost looks like parts of the us much dyer than other parts. Some areas have a nice smooth wet look and some have what looks like dry patches. I just went over the whole thing with clear coat. Is this just parts of the wood still soaking in more than others? Is this something that will eventually quit happening as I get more coats on?

I don't think you are letting the finish dry long enough. I've never used that finish but I've never seen an oil based finish that didn't take at least overnight to dry. Even fast dry polyurethane takes longer than 2 hours.

I would stop using steel wool between coats. Steel wool is dirty, it leaves bits of metal behind and if you don't get it all cleaned off end up with it in the finish. You are better off using sandpaper between the coats.

I think you're right steve. I'll get some fine grit paper. I guess I was impatient and didn't have any sandpaper. I'll give it plenty of dry time.
