For a nice, slick high gloss finish I usually hand rub the finish on (gloss oil based polyurethane) and then polish it with a good polishing compound and finish with a good paste wax (usually Johnson's).

Another option is to hand rub the poly and then start polishing with micro mesh pads. While I still have not yet done that on flat pieces it does work very well on pens we turn.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:17

imo a shinny surface will detract from the beauty of the wood.
if i was to do a gloss finish i would probably spray with gloss varnish, but i prefure oil and a natural look.
3-4 coats of a danish oil for me. i dont use waxes alot, too much maintenance on a pc thats will be handled alot.
3m puts out a very superior wax. 3M 09030 Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax
