"Wine" bottle stoppers

Just saw the post for whiskey bottle stoppers so thought I'd share too... These are made from actual barrel staves. The color in the middle is the wine that's absorbed into the wood while the wine aged. If you can get your hands on a barrel, it's a pain doing the lamination but these have been big hits when I sell them.

Very nice. i really like the shape and the finish. Great work. Keep it up.

There is a very fine line between a "hobby" and a "mental illness"

Very cool. I was looking for some good ideas for bottle stoppers.

Just used sanding sealer, followed by 4 coats of friction polish

Those stoppers are very beautiful. Great work and these would be very appreciated by someone receiving them as a gift.

Friction polish (FP) may not be a good idea for wine bottle stoppers. FP I believe is made up of alcohol and shellac. The alcohol in the wine will attack the finish. I do one of two finishes. Dip in teak oil overnight, wipe off let dry for 24 hours and buff on the beall system. Alternate method 2 coats of Waterlox. The first coat while on the lathe, let dry overnight and wipe one more coat and let dry.

I've been using friction polish on stoppers for several years now without a problem. Just wipe the stopper after use.

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...
