What would you buy??????????

I want to purchase a wood lathe so what would be a good one to buy? This is for just small projects around the house and I'm just starting out and want to learn. Never used one before but love working with wood.

I would buy a mini lathe. I prefer the Jet but there are a bunch of good ones out there, Rikon, Steel City, Carbo-Tec, and Record come to mind. The reason I like a good quality mini for a starter lathe is that they will do most of what you want to do until you get to larger work. They are easy to store out of the way. They don't seem as intimidating when you use them and they have great resale value if you upgrade or decide you just don't like turning.
The cheaper full size lathes (12x 36) are mostly junk and you just won't enjoy your turning experience. The ones mentioned above are all excellent quality and will give you years of good service.

Thanks for the info, by the way that lamp is unbelieveable!!!! I'm a vol. firefighter and first responder and would love to be able to get to the skill level of doing something like that for our fire hall!!

John gave you some good advice as he usually does. I started with the Jet mini, and found out early that it is hard to beat and the resale value is high because most wannabe turners heard about the Jet. Good luck to you and remember you won't get good without practicing a lot. Mitch
