I was cutting into some of my skid wood which is normally red or white oak and saw this (see pic) just as a chunk of wood came out. feels like a hardwood but i have never seen a white and black sides to wood before. Anyone know what it is? I would love to get some more of it

Looks like birch to me. Maybe beech...but I'll stick with birch.

Thanks for the replies...I thought the white looked like birch or poplar, but I haven't seen those with the black grain though...really liked the nice contrast in the wood. I guess it might have been something in the root system that caused it and that i got lucky on this piece of skid wood.
