Well here's mine

First I would like to thank all of you for the advice and information I have been reading here. I have been lurking for a few months and finally signed up so that I may add my $.02 worth.

I have wanted a lathe for quite some time and now that I am currently unemployed I have plenty of time on my hands. I got my lathe just after Christmas and have turned nearly everyday 4 to 6 hours. I have made some pretty piles of shavings, the end products have been pretty good also, so far. I have turned about 4 dozen pens/pencils, a dozen or so bottle stoppers, and about 10- to 15 bowls. The bowl below is my first complete bowl. All of the others are in the drying process and are all oak. I have access to a large amount of oak so I will be using it primarily. I doe have some holly but it is rather small, 4-5 inches in diameter, so I don't know what I will do with it.

This is my first complete bowl. It is about 3.5 inches high and 5 inches in diameter. I finished it with paste wax and mineral oil. I would have two more complete but I turned them into funnels! I may try to salvage them by putting a holly base on them. I hate to use them for firewood! Anyway here it is:

Very nicely done. Welcome to the forum. I see that you are going to fit in here just nicely.

There is a very fine line between a "hobby" and a "mental illness"

Welcome. Nice job on the first finished bowl. We've all made (and occasionally will again) funnels, it's part of the learning curve. 2 suggestions for you. First, resize your pics smaller. Second, to improve your bowls, try for a nice continuous curve, leave no flat walls, inside or out. Just to give ya something to strive for

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...

Nice job on the bowl, you'll be hooked in no time

I measured it once, and I cut it twice, and it's still too short......

thanks for the comments and suggestions and I am sorry for the size of the pic. I will do better next time I promise. And I am not going to get hooked I am already there.
