Unfinished box and various other things

Well, after a week of turning, I must say I think I'm in love. Learning the basics and just figuring things out is ok for a while but I needed more so I picked up the DVD "The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan". (So that's how you use the skew chisel.) I practiced a couple of evenings using the skew to make v-grooves and beads, which will probably be a standard practice routine for a while. Here's some of my first weeks practice.

So not wanting to sit back and watch everyone else I all the fun, I decided to try to make a box. The wood is green sycamore.

Wondering how I was going to hollow out the top and cut the lip, I referenced Richard's DVD and decided to make a friction chuck (correct my terminology if I'm wrong) out of green wood. This is what was left after trying to get the top out for an hour.

Maybe green wood for the chuck wasn't such a good idea, but what the heck, that's how you learn.

Looks like fun. I have been thinking of trying turning at some point soon. 2 questions.
1. What kind of wood is the piece 2nd from the right?
2. What kind of lathe did you get for your first machine?

That piece is silver maple, which will be one of mine main woods for a while since I have plenty of it available. The lathe is the Rikon mini lathe. It's been fine so far but I really don't have anything to compare it to. Jet mini's seem to be popular also.
