Turning Pearl

I want to attempt a pen with an abalone inlay. I'm wondering what to expect if I attempt to turn the abalone after it's inlayed in the wood. Anybody tried that?

Not sure what you are doing but I would think the abalone would not be too thick and you would turn it away. Are you inlaying the abalone??? Why not turn the blank and then inlay it and finish it from there.

I want to sandwich a piece of abalone (think donut) in the middle of a pen blank. I'll need to cement it and the blank onto the brass tube, so the abalone will end up being turned when the blank is turned (I think) I would be eager to get other ideas.

I've only worked abalone with a file and sandpaper. never turned it. I would certainly make a test piece first. I'm guessing it would scrape better than cut. Most people that turn ivory use scrapers but don't know how that relates to shell.
