Turning challenge

I did this purely as an exercise to help me visualize and turn consistent curves. I couldn't believe how hard it was and how long it took to get a decent sphere. It was a real eye opener.
I used a template to check my progress. I wouldn't have come close without it. I hope it doesn't crack but I know it will. Fun though. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Bonanza,
Sometimes it helps when you are trying to refine your shape to look at the whole curve, not just where your cutting tip is. If you have a piece of white cardboard, you can use that as a backdrop so you can see your bowl better. Takes a little practice, but that's half the fun. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

Nice job now make another dozen!

Made a jig similar to this one, not very good, so made on that went into tool rest base which worked little better. Got idea for making these jigs from Adventures in Woodturning by David Springett.
http://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/page.asp?p=1527

did make chuck on faceplate like shown in picture 8 used a prong center in tailstock. Both Springett’s book and David Hopper’s book Multi Centre woodturning have lot of ideas for different jigs you can make.

I like this homemade version the best.

Found jig on faceplate & prong center turning with both spindle gouge and skew chisels easier after first half dozen spheres. While making dedicated sphere jig fun did not have much to show in way of results.
