turned newel post embedded in landing
i'm finishing up a new set of stairs. the design is such that the stairs have a landing (or "box) on either side of them, the top of which is the finished floor height.
per code, there will be one railing which terminates on a post.
the layout is such that the post will need to be notched into the outside corner of one of the boxes to line up with the casing through the door at the top of teh stairs to attach the railing to.
i'm hoping to turn a period style (late 1800s) newel post.
what i'm wondering is, can i cut the notch first, and then turn it? after it's profiled, i see it being very challenging to cut a tight fitting notch onto the corner.
