Tree "Dye"ing

I watched a program a while back about people having a "Live" tree when it is young and small and drilling a small hole into the side of the tree and incerting a tube in the hole. After the tube has been installed an "I V" type bag filled with dye is hung up so the dye can slowly be absorbed by the tree over time. I know this takes time (YEARS) but over time the entire tree will be colored inside. Has anyone else heard of this? This program showed a whole tree farm being done like this. Sounds stupid but it worked.

there were some people dying Aspen trees that I read about in a magazine a very long time ago. don't remember much about it. Not a process I will ever try.
