Wow Ken, that is awesome. I really like the design of it. I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw the title of your post. I was thinking that you turned the entire pen out of antler and that it would just look like a white pen. I love the way you left the antler tip intact and turned the tip of the pen. Looks absolutely fantastic and I'm sure that your friend will be overjoyed. I would be.

I have to agree. It is a very nice and different pen design. I've not seen one like that before. You did a great job.

Ken that is really cool. I like your approach with using the tip of the antler.

With the upper piece of the pen did you do any shaping to it? If so what did you use? Also are there any of the actual pen parts in that upper portion?

1st Antler Pen

Thanks folks,on the tip, I shaped the bottom by hand to where it matched up at the center, but didn't like how it matched up when I opened an closed it,so I put the center band in,but I did have to sand the whole top by hand to 12000 micro mesh, then buffed then applied a coat of carnuba wax.I also used a tube insert for the top part,It was fun drilling the hole on lathe,as I was REAL worried about it catching or going thru the side of the blank,as I was holding it in my hand.

Thanks Ken. That is kinda what I thought and how I am going to approach a little project I have. A friend gave me an antler of a deer his wife shot and wants me to make a pen and a letter opener for her.
I am planning on keeping the upper tine on the letter opener and just shape the bottom as you did. Thanks again and nice job!

Ken,
Very Nicely Done!
Antler is my favorite turning medium, and best seller. I have used several different species, whitetail, mule deer, elk, and moose.
Until now I've never seen anyone take your approach with the antler tip
Beautiful!

Beleive it or not you do get used to the smell
