I'm all over this like a fat kid on a smartie. Now that my lathe stand is finished I'll have to try some of these. Great work man. Really love the one with the holes.

There is a very fine line between a "hobby" and a "mental illness"

Those are some nice ornaments and the spalting is really nice also. I used one of the pieces I got from Steve and turned a bottle stooper. I took it to work the next day and the first person that saw it bought it because of the beauty of the wood. Thank you Steve and sorry I didn't even get to take a picture.

That happens. Nice when others appreciate your work.

On the holes....

I teach a class on what I call "unhollow" ornaments. These have either 2, 3 or four openings.
Follow the link below for some process photos.

I've found the best thing to do is drill the holes after you round the blank, using a simple v-block you can make or build.

Why? First, it's easier to make the holes the right size when you know the actual diameter. Next, it's easier to perfectly center the blank in a vblock and never get an off-center hole. Also, you can rotate a spindle 60 degrees to do a 3-hole variation, which you don't want to try with a square blank. Lastly, it's better to have the corners knocked off BEFORE you start turning air around those open areas.
