Wink Small box with a little extra

This piece of maple (I think) stands about 5" tall, 3 1/2" at its' widest point. The knob on top is cocobolo (I actually bought some wood ) and finished with wipe on poly.

Very, uh nice, uh! I am officially jealous of the wonderful craftsmanship that ALL of you guys display on this forum. Real works of art...I am truly humbled.

That's a great looking piece. I love the shape of the inside and the outside. The cocobolo is a great contrast to the "maple". Nice choice of wood and shape.

Really like that finish

Would wipe-on poly work for pens? durable enough? I really prefer the look and feel of wood, but want to protect the wood from the oils in our hands, obviously. Not into the high gloss, plastic look...just personal preference.

I haven't done pens Mrs. TT but I don't think wipe on poly would work well on pens. Might get a second opinion on that one though.

I am new to turning and was wondering if 5" the total height or is that just the box without the lid? I may try to make something like this.
