screw center ?

I'm using the Grizzly Hobby Lathe H2669. One of the parts that came with the lathe is something called a screw center. Being a newbie to wood turning could someone explain what this is and how it is used?

It's pretty simply. You just screw the wood onto the screw center and then turn it. If it's a small screw center it's handy for cabinet knobs. If it's a large screw center it can be used for the first part of turning a bowl.

Thanks john.

When should you use a spur center vs. screw center?

A spur center is usually used to drive work between centers such as a chair leg or ball bat. Some people cut slots for the spur center or simply drive it in with a wooden mallet. If you have a heavy duty lathe you can simply screw the tailstock down to force the spur center into the end of the wood.
A screw center is usually used without the tailstock although depending on the size of the project you might want to use the tailstock for safety until the piece is spinning true.
