rectangular Walnut bowl

I finally had time to put some finish on this thing and shoot it. I don't usually leave the sap wood in the bottom but it just sort of worked out that way in this bowl. Turned totally green to 1/4" thanks to the Gauge "T" thickness gauge.
11" across 4" high. Finished with Minwax wipe on Poly. I think it was about 3 coats. I didn't want it glossy and I may take it back down a little to a softer looking shine.
I thought I had nailed the outside curve but the movement of the wood flattened it out a little just as it turns the corner to head out into the wings. It didn't warp around the knot hardly at all. It just made it a little lumpy.

beautiful ... that's a knuckle buster if I ever saw one ... how are your fingers, all intact?

You can never have too much pepperoni on your pizza or own too many clamps.

Funny you should ask. I did stick the knuckle of thumb into it once. I haven't done that in years and based on how that felt I probably won't do it anytime soon either. I actually have a remote switch but I'm so used to hitting the switch on the headstock that I reached around to turn it off and it hit my thumb. I think I said something like "darn that wasn't a smart thing to do" only it was abbreviated to 4 letters.

That looks awesome John. Is that a little foot on it?

John,
nice piece. I like the sapwood in the edges and the bottom. Makes for a good contrast. I have only made a few square pieces. They are fun but not my favorite by far.

Yes it is a little foot on the bottom. I don't usually leave those but I had tearout problems in the very bottom and it started to get thin so I left the extra foot to leave me with enough thickness.
Or I could just lie and say that it gives the bowl lift and that's why I turn these little feet.

Wait till you see the hand mirror I'm working on. You talk about something scary. This is the first mirror with and handle that I've turned with the handle in place. It completely disappears when it's spinning. Very scary. I'm carving the handle after turning the main body so it will be a while because I have to at least get started on some other projects that have to finished by Christmas.
