Pet store wood?

I was at my local mom and pop pet store getting some critters for my dragons dinner, I always stroll through and check things out. I noticed some new decorative pieces of what looks like drift wood but with much darker color and light swirls running through it. It felt very dense and cold to the touch while holding it there was no name on the stuff just a price-tag. The owner wasnt there to answer any questions about it so I left it there... Should I go back and get it? It had a-lot of large burl bumps. The only thing I can compare it to would be maybe a root of something...

Anybody can become a woodworker, but only a Craftsmen can hide his mistakes!
