Pen turning in combination with carvings??

I thought of turning a pen like usual but instead of adding the clip I would make some kind of carving like a face or something.Has anyone tried this? My only problem is I don't know how to carve.I am looking to learn and add some "WOW" to a new pen design.Any Ideas???

Donny I can't carve either but don't let stand in your way. I think you may be on to a neat idea. Try it out and see what you can come up with and remember to post the pics! It's ideas and inspiration like this that some of the really unique items are born from!

I'm thinking about a book called "How to Carve Woodspirits" By:Skylar Johnson.I was thinking of turning the bottom of the pen as usual but making the top part longer.Drill a blind hole in the top.Turn the top part but leave about 1" at the top to work with.Add your carvings and your pen parts and you have a unique type of pen.Does this sound like it would work?
