Pen turning

I am turning a pen out of walnut. When I get down to the metal spacer indicating the proper diameter the wood keeps splitting or breaking. Am I doing something wrong or is this maple just going to crack like that as a property of the wood?

Thanks!

Are you using a scraper or a cutting tool. A scraper applies more force to the wood which can easily split it. What kind of glue are you using to glue the wood to the brass. I rough up the brass with course sandpaper and then use 5 minute epoxy. The wood might try to split but it isn't coming off that brass.

As far as the glue is concerned, I use CNA adhesive and have never had a problem. Mind you, I have never turned walnut.
