pen / bottle stopper finishing poll

I hope that I am in the right forum. I saw the finishing forum, but, I am asking about pens and stoppers. Mods, please move me if necessary.

Anyway, what do you use as a finish on your pens and bottle stoppers?

I have been using Shellawax and I am pleased so far. I sand to 600 grit, then I use 0000 steel wool till I get a pretty decent shine. Then I use three coats of Shellawax.

I have to learn to do CA as I am going to make razors, brushes and soap bowls and they need to be waterproof.

What other finishes are out there?

Any down sides that you see to what I am doing. I am just learning.

Thank You

Andy

I was going to make it a poll. Since I do not know all what is out there, I can't. TIA

Thank You

Andy

Andy, I would learn and use the CA method. Thats what I use and it works great and to me its easy to learn. Too bad you don't live close by or I could show you in about 15 min. I've taught a few so far and it does a great job.

I have CA coming. I have watched a couple vids. I have to learn for the Shaving stuff. Do you put anything over it?

Thank You

Andy

For pens and stoppers I prefer Doctor's Woodshop finishes http://www.doctorswoodshop.com/. THey're a lot like Shellawax, but I like them better...seem to give a nicer finish, and he's not too far from me. Very great customer service. I got to meet Mike at My local Woodcraft a few weeks ago and he is a super nice guy. Very helpful about what to use on what.

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...

I was turning pens to try and sell for a while and I found an awesome polish bar called HUT P.P.P (perfect pen polish) and honesty they don't kid when they say perfect. There is a satin bar and and optional high gloss bar for after the satin. It gives as good if not better shine then shelawax, its extremely easy and fast to apply, and is wayyyyy cheaper ($5 a bar and you get a ton of use out of one bar for something like pens.) I found it in a catalog from a company called Pen State Industries, they have a ton of different turning stuff and some of it is very inspired, I recommend checking them out.

P.S.
selling pens was a great profit but the effort it takes to sell them made it not worth it
