I have had the most luck turning wood when it is green. When the tree is being cut down you would really like to seal the peice in wood sealer (green wood sealer or canning wax). Then when you are ready to turn the peice either that day or two weeks down the road, turn it to about 1" of wood all the way around. After this a lot of people have a discrepancy of what to do either seal it right away again or just let it dry. I found if you seal it lightly again and then let it dry for about a year, then go back and turn it you will have much more luck. Hope this helps.
