New Lathe

Hey All,

I did something bad the other night. I have a Rand mini lathe, that i broke the tail stock the other night. I cannot seem to find the parts to fix it. So now i have to look to buy a new lathe.

I was hoping to upgrade my lathe in a couple of months like in March after I have been turning for a year. Now I am in a pickle, I cannot afford to go out and by the Delta 46-455 that I was hoping to get in March of next year.

But if I but a new one now, will be hard for me to get a new one in a couple of months

So I could purchase another 149 dollar rand mini from harbor freight. I really do not want to get another rand because of the design, and it being loud.

So here is what I am looking at

SHOP FOX W1752 Mini Wood Lathe - $246.67

RIKON Mini Lathe, Item #832637 from Woodcraft - $349.99

Jet JML-1014I 10'' X 14'' Indexing Mini Lathe - $349.99

Excelsior Mini Lathe, Item #33207 from Rockler - 249.99

Please tell me your experiences with the lathes and which one you would recommend.

Thanks
Sam

Not familiar with a Rand. Got pics? How did you break the tailstock?

See 'my photos', for some pics. Rebuilding a cheap lathe.

The tailstock was the worst component on the lathe. Sloppy as hell.

So, I just ordered the wife the 'Commander" from PSI. It's on backorder for a month.

I may put off working on the cheapie till next summer.

Harrison, at your service!

I've had the Rikon for just about 2 years now and it's been a good lathe. I use it pretty regular have probably pushed it's limits with some rather large out of balance pieces. Since it's the only one I've used it's the only one I can speak to. The Rikon does have a 12" swing and I'm thinking the others are 10".
