new cupcake box

This is my latest cupcake box. I'm using the old icing formula so I could remember what I liked and didn't like about it. I'm working on a new formula using epoxy that should look more like real icing and will be many times tougher.

I got a sweet tooth all the sudden. Hey John do you do cotton candy too?

That takes some talent, nice job.

That's kinda cool. How big is it? Can we see a photo with the lid off? Can you give us an explanation of how you make it?
What the heck, can you make one for me?
Ken

There is a very fine line between a "hobby" and a "mental illness"

They are cupcake size. About 2 1/2" across and high. I don't have a photo with the lid off. I'll do one when I finish the next 2. I make the bottom by turning a box bottom, thread the inside and then use a router and index plate to make the outside pleats.
The top is just a threaded box lid. Then I mixed up powedered wood putty to make the icing. It works pretty well but is too matt and pretty fragile.

Somebody's got to say it. That's pretty sweet.

Very nice work, indeed. Just curious, what made you decide to make these? Very unusual and creative.

I was making small boxes and made one with a sloped sided base and I airbrushed some color on the top. After I finished it I said, wow that looks like a cupcake. Then I though, wait a minute. I have the skills and tools to make a real cupcake. Since then I've been playing with improving the techniques until it really looks real. Sometimes I carve the cake part to give it more of a muffin feel as far as shape. On this one I didn't.
