My Second Turning

I've been lurking for some time here, getting tips and ideas. Here's my first attempt for a suspended square bowl and is only my second turning. I did this in pine just to see if I could do it. I have a chunk of Purple Heart that I'm going to do next. Obviously, I'm very new to this round stuff but it's gotten me wanting more. My next attempt, I'll round out the top more so I don't leave it as flat as this one is. What I did wrong there was I took too much out of the bottom before I did the top contour.

That's not bad for a first attempt. Square edged bowls are a little tricky, especially when sanding. On a project like this you have to plan it out and stop frequently and look at the shape overall from both sides. Keep going, try another.

Way to jump right in with a nice, easy project I've been turning for over 4 years and I haven't attempted one of those yet (although it is on the list). Great job. Keep having fun and be safe.

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...

Thanks guys. This turning is very addictive for sure.

On this type of bowl, the bottom is the hardest part and that's where I spent my time. I'm ready for the purple heart next. I've been looking at scoops too. Yes, with the off-centered turned handle. I may never build a square box anymore!
