My first lathe

So i just got my first lathe last Saturday. It is a harbor freight mini lathe. Its the one thats they always have on sale with a coupon for 160. I also got the turning chisel kit that the had for 40.

I have already turned 3 small bowls and a piece of fire wood into a practice lamp spindle.

The first bowl I tuned is going to be used as a dice shaker the second bowl turned didn't work out because its side snapped off when I was turning it. My third bowl Is for paper clips to go in. All the bowls I made are from mahogany and I finished them with the lathe on with wax and they turned out great.

I made a practice lamp spindle out of wood that I think is apple wood. It turned out great.

I am going to make a lamp out of maple and walnut. What I think would look good would be is have 4 inches of maple and then a inch of walnut.

I have a couple of questions.

How should I sharpen my turning tools.

My second question it were can I get blanks for pen turning and other small turnings.

Lighten up . It's just the internet.

I agree. Penn State Industries sells many types of pen blanks. From cheap basic common hardwoods to exotic foreign woods. Depends on what you want.

As for sharpening the tools, you will need a basic bench grinder. There are a few threads on this right now. A very good one started by Saw dust factory. Check it out. YouTube videos always help.

You should post pics of you turnings.

As to your pen blanks, you can register yourself to Penturners.org . Everything about pen turning is in that forum.

If you have a lumber yard around you, you might ask if they have "culls" that they do sell at a reduced price. You might be able to score some pieces that you can use.

All right well I am planning on posting pictures of my lamp tonight. All I have left to do is put one more coat of shellac on the base drill a hole through it and wire it up.
