Looks good Robert.
I was guessing poplar also. Wipe some lacquer or something on it so it stays nice. When I cut the captive rings free, I wind a piece of sanding strip around the stem and put a piece of tape on each end to hold it in place. Then I sand the inside of the captive ring with it while the lathe is spinning. I usually sand the rest of the ring before cutting it loose.

Very nice looking goblet. Looks good in Poplar. Probably will look good in any species. So, is this the first for a service of 12?

thanks a bunch guys
my dad had told me to wrap the stem with sandpaper and use a rubber band to hold it but i couldnt get that to work
i will definately do that on the next one and hope to have 2 rings on it
