Microwave drying question

Hi guys! I was going to try microwaving my blanks for drying like some of you have, but do I microwave it before it is turned, or when it is rough out, or when it is done(and before sanding)? Thanx in advance,

-Tony

I turn mine green to a rough thickness then nuke it. It's worked out pretty well so far. I think if you microwave the block you will have too much thickness and be at it for a lot longer with less desirable results.

It would be very hard to dry thick blanks and keep them from cracking. You would have to do tons of cycles on lower power and even then I wouldn't take any bets. It's much safer to rough turn them. Be sure and turn them to an even thickness throughout, even the bottom. Even though you will have to remove a lot of wood to get it round the bottom doesn't need as much wood removed as the sides. Because of that I leave the tenon and bottom just a little thicker than I need and then leave the sides this thickness. Then when I turn the sides down to get rid of the warp and turn away the tenon on the bottom the whole bowl will end up the same thickness. Does that make sense, I'm apparently not as literate this morning.
