Question Mate wood

I'm trying to make a wooden máte. It is a vessel used in Argentina to make Yerba Máte, a tea like beverage. Traditionally either a gourd or carob wood are used to make a máte. My problem is that carob wood is not available in NC. Does anybody know what would be a suitable substitute for carob wood? I know of some tropical woods that would hold water, but I afraid of a reaction that might cause health issues. Cocobolo for example.

Do a Google search. Carob wood is available at many places.

RRBrown, knottscott and many others were banned, they didn't just leave. They were banned for standing up to the new owners that are destroying this site. Come join us all at woodworking chat, the best new woodworking site on the net!!

maté

Yes, I have seen carob wood available on line, just as most anything can be found on line. But, I was really interested to know if anyone knew of another wood that might be more readily available that would be a good substitute.

Mate

Hey MM, did you ever find any replacement wood for Carob? I too am looking to turn a couple of mate gourds for myself and my brothers.

I did find some carob wood online here: http://www.bethlehemolivewood.net/.1...arent=133&pg=1

And i called them and they can do custom sizes, but it was pretty pricey and I too was looking for a local substitute.

let me know if you found anything.

thanks,
TC
