Question Making a pipe?

I searched around but couldn't find much on the topic. I have a friend that's smoked pipes pretty much forever. I'm interested in turning a nice one for him. Has anyone here turned a pipe? Are there any woods that I should stay away from due to possible health risks?

I can't help you, but there's a guy called Steve Norse who makes pipes. His company is Vermont Freehand, he also sells the materials like briar (for the bowls) and ebonite (for the stems) ... and he's a good guy. You can find him on FaceBook or his own website.
