Made a nice funnel today!

Works pretty well as a megaphone too. I wish I could come up with a single word to describe the rush of emotions experienced in that split second when the piece you've been working on for the last several hours becomes two pieces. Oh well, couldn't use that word in public anyway:)

Sorry to hear that, I did that on one of my first turnings and it's definitely discouraging. Failure is all what you make if it; it can be your greatest weakness or biggest strength, it's all what you make of it!

Been there, done that. More than
once ;-( Really got to stop trying to turn the inside bigger than the outside!

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...

Well, it would make a nice lamp shade...

I want to die quietly in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like the passengers of his car.

I can't have too many dunce caps. Good idea. And thanks for seeking out something positive in that pic. I was told that is some kind of elm. Most of that tree is still standing so I figured I'd ID it when it leafs out.

Bonanza,
We are going to start a new show and tell table at our turning club for screwup pieces. We thought it might encourage some of our newer turners to start bringing some of their work in for the regular show and tell table. Sometimes they can be intimidated by some of the nice work the old timers bring in.
When you are doing some hollowing, you have to learn when to stop, as demonstrated in the pic below.

Yeah, if we're doing a show and tell, here's one that I fixed after turning a bit too thin on the bottom when I was removing the tenon. Added a nice feature to the bowl though.
