live center rec?

I'm trying to determine which type of live center to put in my big patternmaker's lathe. I have a 60 degree cone on my smaller lather and like it a lot for spindle work.

However, I plan on spinning big porch posts and columns with this lathe, and I'm wondering if I would be better off with a live cup center for more stability?

Looking for something under $50, ideally.

Thanks.

Are you wanting a different shape to the tip or a live center vs a dead center. I use live centers exclusively but do change the tips out. I like a cup center for a lot of things. A 60 degree point can split smaller wood if too much force is applied. With larger spindles you won't have a problem.

definitely don't want a dead center.
just wondering what is a good center for heavy duty turning of large diameter, long and heavy pieces.

i have the groz heavy duty on my delta lathe. haven't had any problems with it. but maybe there is something better.
what about the slimline revolving center at packardwoodworks. looks pretty cute.
any reason to spent $60 on one, when you can get a well reviewed 60 degree cone for $15?

thanks.

Do not think you will have a problem with a 60 degree live center turning long and heavy wood. Might want to look for a heavy duty live center with good bearings. Grizzly has a good selection for under $50. Either G5686 or G9361 should work well for you in that price range.

Both Nova and Oneway live centers pretty good too, but cost more. They both have a cup center if remove the cone. Both live centers have a loyal following.

I have been using a G1293 live center from Grizzly since 1994, they do not sell that one anymore. Think cost about $32 with shipping back then. I use an awl to poke a hole in center of spindles and bowls with a mallet before mounting on lathe.

My live center that came with Jet 1642 has a cup center if remove the cone. My Grizzly gets used instead too lazy to find tool to remove cone.

It's not cheap but the Nova Live center is extremely versatile with several interchangeable parts. It has outlasted a cheaper live center I had. It has a very short #2 morse taper for the replaceable points. This makes it very easy to make your own wooden adaptors. It also comes with an adaptor that has a screw thread to help you make your own accessories.
