lathe "stuff" storage

for the time being my shop is in sort of a flux. In addition, I take my small lathe on the road twice a year and make Christmas ornaments for charity and the charity gets the proceeds, so things need to be some what mobile.

I toyed with building a stand with drawers and storage and the time and cost, compared with the likely finish of the end product, made me reconsider.

So today I bought a mechanics tool cart. 38 inches high with lockable casters. The top compartment is 3 inches deep and 25 inches wide and 17 inches deep. That is enough room for my lathe knives to lay side by side. Then there are four drawers for the chucks, dividers, ruler, tri square, etc., The bottom shelf leaves about 25 x 17 for storage of small turning pieces, etc. I don't think I could make as nice a stand, and this would be easy to take to demonstrations.

I'm dealing with lathe stuff storage myself right now. New workshop, and the lathe is not near a wall. Chucks, centers, tool rests, abrasives, measuring tools, and the turning tools themselves all need to find a home. Carts are my solution too.

I get that too. Never enough room to store anything, I really do need to make a couple of cabinets for my shop specificity my lathe.

You guys probably have far more stuff than I do, but I store all my stuff on a mobile cart with the Lathe-

I have a problem with storage also as I am a Electrical Engineer by trade - so LOTS of little stuff to store. A mechanics tool chest works great for storage however they can get very expensive. So I designed and built a storage system that I can expand on and grow as I need space. You can see the drawers I inserted underneath the lathe on the cart and the link at the bottom will take you to more detail of the 6 foot cabinet I did for my electronics stuff.

I know not everyone has their own laser cutter, but if interested just send me a PM. Those metal cabinets with the 1 - 2" deep drawers are ungodly expensive!

Here is more detail for the Storage Cabinet
