hello, please advice in buying a lathe

Hello, I am new to this group and I have a more than average interest in working with wood. I am from Holland so my english won't be perfect. I have a lathe (Huvema, dutch) but it is old and very outdated. Chucks are not suitable and therefore I want to buy another lathe, I am running out of possibilities to do some serious work on it.

I would like some advice on what to choose for. I have a possibility of buying a Myford ML8 (grey) with a number of chucks (in- and outboard). Asking price is 500 euros (it looks to be in very perfect condition). What would be a reasonable bidding price? Only thing that worries me is the need of more speedchoices. And what if something breaks down, parts are still being sold but for how long? Here is the link to the advertisement. http://www.marktplaats.nl/index.php?...draaibank.html

I was looking on an english webstore and saw the Scheppach DMS 900. The pricing is very good since in Holland they ask for a lathe like that around 800 euros. Here it was 380 euros without shipping. Will one outgrow it quickly?

I would like to turn bowls aswell as doing some regular spindle turning.

Thanks in advantage.
Regards, Chris

Chris,
Welcome to the forum. I am not familiar with the lathes you mentioned. Over here in the states the familiar brands are Jet, Delta, Oneway, Vega, Nova, Rikon, etc. A lot of the large companies are offering substantial discounts right now due to the economy. You may want to check some of them out if they are available to you.

Hello, please advise in buying a lathe

Hi Chris and wecome ,great bunch of folks here that will try to help out if they can.I have a Ricon and a Nova 1624,The Ricon is a smaller lathe, but a great little lathe, but if you are looking for a full size lathe the Nova is a great lathe.I can turn a 16" bowl on it with no trouble, but like Mike said there are so many to choose from.QUESTION you said you from Holland,do you still live there or does it mean your in the USA ?
Good luck
Ken

Thanks. No I don't live in the USA, but in Holland. Since there are not so much woodturners I thought I ask my question here, also because I hoped the Myford ML8 is known here. Better try in Britain I guess, since it are Britich made lathes. The story is that I don't want to spend to much dollars (euros) but the few I will spend don't want to be wasted. The nova I have seen and felt, is a very fine machine but a little above budget.
The Scheppach is a German machine, good known brand over here, which made a lathe for beginner and semi-pro. (10 speeds variomatic, turnable headstock, clockwise and anti clockwise spindle rotation etc.)
The Myford is made untill '85, is an old but very solid machine still have spares but that is what worries me a bit. Anyways thanks for the help so far.
